Think of Kariega (Uitenhage) and Goodyear is likely to come up in any conversation – over the past 70+ years, Goodyear shaped the lives of generations of local entrepreneurs and employees.
In June, when Goodyear announced they were closing their manufacturing operations, it was another blow to the Eastern Cape economy. The plant employed around 900 people and contributed to many SMME’s involved in logistics, maintenance and other services. Over the past two months, it has been gut wrenching to watch the closure play out, reaching settlement last week.
